Chapter 2
Derek
Derek practically ran into the lunch room, Josh trailing behind him. He was ravenous! He suddenly felt like he could consume and entire cow, although logically he knew he could go weeks without food if need be; another perk of wolf hood. His teachers thought it was just because he was a “growing young man” but his mother knew better. She kept the house packed with food. Having a teenage boy was one thing but having a teenage wolf was in a whole other field. Grrrrgle! His stomach announced to the cafeteria, deciding to let everyone know how hungry he actually was.
“Ahhhhh!” Josh yawned with outstretched arms. “I’m so tired its not even funny, I have got to start going to bed before one. I’m officially a sleep addict, and I’m having withdrawals.” Josh whined, unaware of Derek who was not really listening at all, looking around the room as they got lunch. He wanted to see that girl again, she intrigued him and he had no idea why. He simply felt drawn to her, and he desperately wished she felt the same way.
“Dude, what’s wrong with you today? Earth to Derek, earth to Derek.” His friend chanted, swing his hand in Derek’s face.
“Nothing, it’s just… Nothing.” Derek shrugged.
“Oh now you have to tell me. Come on dude I’ve been your best friend since 3rd grade when you punched me in the eye and we had to sit in the principal’s office for an hour. What’s up?” Josh pestered.
“There’s this girl I met. Well, actually I kind of ran into her.”
“Wow, now you really have a shot.” Josh teased, laughing as they sat at an empty table.
“Shut up. I don’t know, there was just something about her.” Derek murmured as he laid his head, face down, on the table.
“What was so special?” Josh said while stuffing his face.
“She just…I don’t know. She’s not like the girls I’ve been with. Defiantly not like Kate.” He said picking at his food.
“Oh, so she has a soul. That really is a good character trait, don’t you think?” He muttered with a slight hint of irritation behind his words.
“Kate has a soul.” Derek snapped. ‘At least I think she has a soul…’ he thought silently. “Any way, Kate might not be a problem anymore…” He trailed off and laid his head on his arm.
He ate as quickly as he could, disappointed he hadn’t seen that girl. He wondered why she wasn’t there, or maybe she was and he just hadn’t seen her. He sure didn’t know why he cared. He didn’t even know her name, but man was that a face to remember.
He looked up at Josh.
“Hey man, I got to go, I forgot, I uh have lunch detention for Mrs. Suarez. She caught me with gum again.” Derek fibbed as he got up and threw the remaining napkin from his plate away. He looked up and scanned the lunch room one last time, looking for her.
“Ok, tell her she’s lookin fine today. I know that curvy woman just cant get enough of me!” He joked with a wink.
“Nasty dude! Ugh, you have a twisted sense of humor. See ya man.” Derek grimaced at the thought of his much older, obese teacher and walked out of the lunchroom into the deserted hall.
Derek walked around the corner and snuck out the side door, relieved to be out of there. He knew if he got caught the janitors would look the other way, but he would still rather not explain. He let out a deep breath and leaned against the brick. Looking around anxiously, he sniffed the air. The hairs on his neck suddenly stiffened and his heart beat sped up. He knew that smell, he knew it anywhere.
“Hello there.” Purred a small woman in her early twenties, as she rounded the corner. The look she wore on her face said business, but every seductive move said play. His primal instincts were excited and eager. He couldn’t help but be attracted to her. But the rest of him knew what he wanted, what he knew was right.
“Kate. What are you doing here?” He said in a husky voice. He was nervous, but he didn’t plan on showing it. He slowly backed down the wall as she inched closer. She hungrily looked up and down his body assessing his every move. He was scared of what might happen, and whether he would be able to control himself. She smiled and chuckled wryly.
“Same as you. Just hoping to bump into somebody…familiar.” Kate smirked. She made direct eye contact and slinked closer. Derek felt completely torn, so much of him wanted her so badly. She was right there and practically begging. He looked away hoping it would be easier, but as he did this she stepped in front of him and pressed herself into him. She wrapped her arms around his neck and grabbed the hair at the base of his neck tugging slightly. ‘Oh God…’ he thought. He hated she knew just what to do to drive him mad.
“Look at me sweet heart, I want to see that pretty face.” She cooed. She put her face by his collar bone and breathed lightly, turning him on more then he could imagine. She leaned on him again pushing her breast against him and he could feel himself getting hard. She began kissing his collar bone lightly, working her way up to his neck. He could feel her hands wandering over his biceps, on his chest and finally down to his six pack (that he’d so hard for), inch by inch making it harder to think.
“I missed you…hmmm.” She moaned. He felt like he was on ecstasy, he couldn’t think straight with her around him. He knew what was going on was illegal and had to stop, he just couldn’t bring himself to make it end. The animal inside of him was begging, pleading with him just to let it happed like it had before. It wanted nothing more for them to run back to her car and do everything she would let him.
Instead of doing what he planned, he looked down and was pulled into a kiss. He felt her skin against his and didn’t want to stop himself. He grabbed her small hips and turned her so she was pressed against the wall. He felt his pants getting tight and uncomfortable and he leaned on her. He wanted her so badly he couldn’t think strait. He kissed her again, harder. Their mouths danced to an intoxicating rhythm, weaving in and out of each other instinctively.
“St-stop,“ He took a long deep breath and leaned back. “Kate, I…this, we cant do this anymore.” He sighed as she grabbed the front of his jeans and pulled him even closer. He let out a loud breath and looked up, hoping looking away would convince his body that his mind was right.
“Stop what? I don’t see anything going on here…” she said as she slid her hand into his pants, caressing the sensitive skin directly under his abdomen. He knew, if he let her go any further, he wouldn’t be able to say no.
“Kate. Kate stop.” He looked down at her and pulled away. “I’m serious. I cant see you like this anymore.” Her hands fell and she looked away. Gritting her teeth angrily and began to move away.
“What are you saying?” She demanded through a locked jaw, knowing exactly what was coming.
“Kate, I…I can’t…we cant be together anymore.”
Ominous silence surrounded the previously happy couple. She simply crossed her arms and sauntered down the wall. Suddenly, Kate turned and placed a hand on her cocked hip.
“You’ll regret this.” She said sharply with a strait face, but as she turned on her heals and sashayed away in the direction of her car, hips swinging tauntingly the entire way, Derek caught a glimpse of her face. What he focused on was not her anger, but those caramel eyes laced with pools of emotion. Behind the anger and malice on the surface, there was true hate and a mixture of sorrow. He caused this. However the smirk that stretched across her lips along with those haunting eyes sent shivers down his spine.
He walked inside the school and down the hall. He knew Kate was dangerous, no matter how small she was, that’s what worried him. He reached in his pocket for the keys to the van, hoping to skip the next hour or two.
Empty? Wait why is his pocket empty…?
‘Oh no,’ he thought angrily.
“Damn it Tess!”
~
Marie
She nervously walked up to the lunch room, hoping to see Tess soon. Peeking around the corner she saw a busy cafeteria filled with the majority of the student body: which wasn’t much. She looked around, quickly processing each face and didn’t see Tess anywhere. ‘What if she is trying to make you look stupid,’ Marie contemplated, knowing deep down that Tess’ warmth towards her was probably too good to be true. Feeling a presence next to her, she glanced to her right and was instantly relieved.
“Whatcha looking for?” Tess inquired, leaning against the pole that separated the doorway. She wore a red long sleeve shirt with jeans and white sandals. Her dark hair framed her face with slight curls that reached down to her waist. Marie couldn’t help but be slightly intimidated.
“Oh, um you. I was looking for you. Can I still eat lunch with you and your friends? I mean, I don’t have to if there isn’t any room.” Marie spoke, internally rolling her eyes due to embarrassment.
“Yeah, absolutely! But we wont be eating here, we thought we’d drive in town. Wanna come?” She asked, turning on her toes for the nearest exit.
“Sure,” Marie began slowly, as she uneasily followed Tess out the door and toward the parking lot. “But I thought only juniors and seniors were allowed to leave campus for lunch?” She questioned.
“Yeah, and?” Tess replied with a grin. She walked toward a minivan swinging a key ring on her finger. “Still wanna come?” She invited, eyeing Marie playfully.
She apprehensively crossed the threshold of the school door way, making the decision to go with them. It was worth skipping lunch, plus she needed a little rebellion.
As they approached the van Marie spotted an older girl sitting in the drivers seat. Tess hopped in the passenger seat, tossing the keys at her, and Marie got in the back with a thin girl who had a pretty face and a crooked nose. She smiled and closed the door.
“Who’s your pretty friend Tess?” Asked the girl in the drivers seat as she weaved through the parking lot and left campus. She had a blond pixie cut that flirted with her neck and several piercings.
“Oh yeah, guys this is Marie. She just moved here from San Francisco.” Tess gestured towards her. She twisted around in her seat so she was looking at Marie. While pointing to the side with her thumb, she began introducing the girls. “This is Bridget, she’s a junior. She looks tough, but she’s harmless! Right Bridge?”
“Wha-? Oh yeah, don’t mind me, or my lip ring for that matter.” She laughed, keeping her eyes on the road and driving further away from school.
“And this is Katy, she’s a sophomore, like us.” Katy waved. She looked nice enough, Marie hoped to be friends with both of these girls.
“So what do you guys feel like eating? I don’t know about you but I’m craving some Taco Bueno.” Tess said as she sat back in her seat.
“I’m good with that if you guys are.” Replied Bridget as she turned into the parking lot. When the engine shut off they piled out of the van. Marie looked at the girls and smiled.
“So, did you guys grow up here?“ She asked, secretly hoping that one of them was like her.
“No, I’m from Utah. We moved when I was ten. You’re from San Francisco though, that must be so cool! I’ve never been anywhere like that!” Katy squealed excitedly
“Well, I guess. Its super big, easy to get lost in the crowd. I like it here so far though. Its really beautiful.” she concluded while walking towards Taco Bueno. Tess gave Bridget a playful side bump, causing the girls to laugh.
Inside, they sat on swivel stools around a high table and devoured their imitation Mexican food.
“So, what do you guys do for fun around here?” inquired Marie as she looked around at the girls she hoped to called friends
“Well I’m cheerleader. I love it and I’m pretty good.” Chirped Katy.
“I play the violin, does that count?” asked Bridget. They all turned and looked at Tess.
“What? Why do you guys just assume I have some amazing talent like you guys?” She said matter-of-factly.
“Well I can do something kind of cool, I guess.” All three kept their eyes on Tess, waiting.
“Ok, just stay here and watch.” She hopped down from her stool and made her way over to the empty Taco Bueno counter. She turned and winked at the girls and said jokingly, “Hope you guys want more drinks.”
“Hello? Excuse me?” she sang. She braced her hips against the counter and leaned forward seductively. “Hellllo?” she cooed.
“Uh, hi…” said a gangly man, probably in his early twenties. He shifted forward from the back of the establishment and rubbed the back his head.
Tess leaned forward and smiled warmly. Looking him directly in the eye, she began, “We have just a tiny problem over there. You see, when we ordered, we got all our food but you forgot to give us the drinks.” While keeping eye contact, she slid her hand across the counter so it lightly brushed his. “Would you mind giving them to us now? I mean, if you don’t mind…”
“Uh…well, um I guess that’s, uh ok…” He blushed a little and made his way to the soda fountain, not really sure why he was doing what she asked. He walked back over to Tess and handed her the drinks.
“Thanks!” She said with a bright smile and skipped away. As she approached the table she looked around at everybody. She hopped up on the stool and laughed.
“The power of persuasion.” She stated with a grin.

Derek
He sat impatiently in the car, sisterless, keyless, and slightly chilled.
‘Where could she possible be?! I’m freezing! Boy am I gunna give her hell the next time we hunt!’ he thought bitterly. Derek wrapped his arms around his sides, listening to the leather jacket he had gotten for Christmas crunch around him.
“Uhhh” he sighed. He laid his forehead on the wheel and hoping Tess would be there soon. It had already been ten minutes, and she was never going to hear the end of this.
A shiver ran through him and he realized how cold he really was. He wished he could get warm and he suddenly thought of a way. He had been working on controlling his “extra abilities” with his dad recently, and if he was able to control it he was sure he’d heat up.
He leaned back and tried to concentrate. He knew he had to think of something that would get him mad. Closing his eyes he imagined Tess’ face, swollen and horrified. Tears streaming down her cheeks, as she looked up at Dylan, who he hit her again. Derek’s entire body rumbled as he held back a roar. In that moment he wanted to tear him apart and watch him suffer! His body tremored and he could feel it happening. His claws began to reveal themselves and his side burns became thicker. Slowly, he came back to reality, putting his hands on his head, he tried to calm himself.
It had worked, he was right! Derek could feel the heat radiating off of him in waves. Now he had to focus on control. He hoped that he could remember everything his dad told him about steady breathing lowering your heart rate. Soon he was focused on relaxing and controlling his breathing.
‘Its ok,’ He consoled himself, ‘just focus.’ And that’s what his did, for what felt like another ten minutes he just breathed. Completely focused on what he was doing, and warm, he was interrupted by the car door opening.
“Finally.” He said snidely as him and Tess drove away.
